When I was a kid in the 00s, my friends and I rode our bikes all over the place. Our parents didn’t know where we were, and unless they wanted to go out searching or calling people, they didn’t have any way of knowing. None of us had cell phones.
Now, people are too scared to let their kids out of their sight for too long, or they might have a neighbor that can’t mind their own business and call CPS over it.
Having been a child in the 1980s and similarly going anywhere and everywhere, I think back on several situations I was not protected in and should have been. A phone would have helped. That’s the conservative " I drank out of the garden house and survived" mindset, in the 1980s me and many of my friends were sexually abused in a casual fashion because of lack of parenting and other adults having unfettered access to us because our parents had no particular concern of where we were. We were just told we were dirty or bad for it and it was never brought up again. A lackadaisical mindset does not good parenting make.
It doesn’t have to be entirely lackadaisical, but it shouldn’t be as bad as it is now where kids must be locked up inside and supervised all the time. We didn’t really go all that far from our respective houses until we were around 12 or 13, before that we were usually on our own roads or adjacent streets where the others lived, since we mostly lived in close proximity. Later on we’d go ride a couple miles into town and mess around a bit, but there were usually at least 3 of us together, and we didn’t pay much mind to anyone else.
Sure. But also 1.2 million children are trafficked per year and the number of child sex abuse sites on the dark web number into the millions. I also see why in this age people are much more careful.
Can’t lock up your kid because you’re scared of the world. Sure, there’s a chance they end up traumatized or worse because of some predator out there. But statistically this is a very low chance - you should be more worried about your friends and family.
While the chances of them being abused by someone like this is uncertain, having them grow up sheltered and without independence is certain to mess them up. Kids need to grow and explore and take risks. Without this you stunt their eventual development.
Maybe it’s a different perspective for a woman. I feel differently.
You could probably ask this question of most things and get the same answer.
Parents take pictures of their kids thanks to new technology that makes pictures nearly free to take. Parents use limitless access to information to help make smart decisions while raising children. No shit.
