What does this even mean? What are you equipping? What are you activating?

For some reason im thinking about a guy I worked a summer job with who had a cigarette brand tshirt he got for free and it was a messy job so he wore close he did not care for but they he wrote don’t smoke with a marker on it since he did not want to be supporting the vendors product.
