      I was wondering that myself, but judging from the beach grass, where the whale rests must be the high tide line. The water pushed it as far as it could. The whole beach must be very low and flat to be so wide, though it’s possible the photo was taken at a particularly low tide, which would make the beach even bigger than normal. Looks like a humpback to me (based on the appearance of the throat), anyone able to back that up?

        The differential between high and low tides in Alaska is crazy to me. I’m used to only a few feet in the mid Atlantic.

        From high tide this afternoon to the low tide going out right now, Juneau will have a 17 foot swing.

          Canada apparently get the highest with 11.7 metres (38.4 feet) mean tidal range, which I found out by accident because I was actually looking up the range specifically for the UK out of curiosity, knowing it was high but not realising it would be on the top 3 list (E: with maximum range in the Bristol Channel being 15 metres (49 feet)! ) lol
