A US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet has been lost at sea after it fell overboard from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier while it was being towed on board, the Navy said in a statement on Monday.

A US official said initial reports from the scene indicated the Truman made a hard turn to evade Houthi fire, which contributed to the fighter jet falling overboard. Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed on Monday to have launched a drone and missile attack on the aircraft carrier, which is in the Red Sea as part of the US military’s major operation against the Iran-backed group.

All personnel aboard are accounted for, and one sailor sustained a minor injury, the Navy said.

Trump administration offers tribute to mighty Poseidon thanking him for fair winds, calm seas and big water. The President was quoted as saying:

“This is the greatest tribute in the history of tributes, not even Odysseus could have offered what we offered. Tremendous. We’re gonna make America’s oceans and seas and yes, even the beautiful Gulf of America Great Again. This F-18 is the first step in improving relations with Poseidon. Great guy, in fact. Not many people see it because of all the drownings and shipwrecks but behind closed doors he’s a very different person and he runs a tight ship, the ocean is respected and we need to start taking notes from him. Joe Biden didn’t normalize relationships with Atlantis, but I did. Sleepy Joe and Kamala couldn’t do it but I am the first President in 227 years to even get a meeting.”

Does this count as a fighter kill for the Houthi Shaheds?

The whole attack was likely several orders of magnitude cheaper than that one jet.

I used to serve on a similar carrier. In theory, U.S. carriers are one of the best-guarded structures on the planet. We have whole classes of ships that only serve to protect carriers. I can’t express the sheer volume and intensity of safeguards that all failed at once for this to happen. What the actual fuck is going on with this carrier group?

My father-in-law served on one as well. This has to be a major fuck up from everyone top on down. His only thought about it: they were getting it ready to deploy when they came under attack. The smaller destroyer class and others should have picked this up on radar and shot them down.

Its captain was fired in February because it ran over a merchant vessel, now this one makes a hard right without making sure everything on deck is secure.

Fucking Kegseth command chain is FUBAR.

We used to watch the flight deck channel in berthing when they didn’t have any good movies on.

I hope someone on board was watching when it happened at least, it’s like the ultimate version of a bouncing logo hitting the corner perfectly. You wait so long for anything interesting to happen.

Was Hegseth drinking again or is this part of his S.N.A.F.U? My neighbor got drunk and drove her truck into a lake because it looked flat.

So… it fell off the front? I don’t suppose that’s very typical.

Suppose it comes down to do you want to lose personal or damage the ship through hostile fire or can you lose a plane

Sacrificing a jet to protect the ship isn’t the problem. The problem is that there shouldn’t be a situation where that’s a choice you have to make. And I would bet a lot that it actually was no intentional choice at all.

Most ships in a carrier strike group have basically one job: to protect the carrier. Imagine a situation where a drone/missile is launched, detected from far away and yet there is no ship available to intercept it when that’s basically their whole f***ing job and doing an evasive maneuver with such a fast and nimble object as a carrier seems like your best option. That’s basically a whole chain of fuck-ups. The deck crew performing accordingly and having screwed up securing a jet, too, is just the cherry on top.
