  • I’ve had this a lot. I’m almost 40, live alone, and never married, but I often get stuff addressed to “Mr and Mrs solarmonkey”… as a bonus, since my dad’s generation there have been zero new men with that last name (only girls from my dad and his brothers).

I love getting junk mail addressed to my mortgage co-signer, though. He has never lived here. Sometimes they address me with his last name, which is pretty funny (it’s my step-dad, and my mom died years ago, so we really don’t have much of a relationship at this point, and definitely don’t share a last name).

I like throwing that stuff directly in the recycling. If you don’t even know who I am that makes my job really easy.

  • So the sitting president shouldn’t be allowed to keep doing things they have been doing for years, just because it’s close to an election and someone unrelated might do something else after getting elected?

That’s stupid. Sorry but it is. It’s the same logic that prevented Obama from seating Supreme Court justices. And look how that turned out.

If this was the first ever time it was tried, maybe, but even then, we’d never have anything nice in that case. And we’d never get anything done from August to January in election years, which would also be intensely stupid.

We need to take what we can get, not be all weird about when it happens.

  • I used to volunteer for planned parenthood and they gave me all sorts of condom goodies to hand out wherever I went. I’m asexual so it was fun for me to swat down men asking if they could use them on me! “Do you want the free awesome condoms, or do you want to piss off the safe sex fairy? That’s what I thought. Go have fun now.”

Around Halloween, condoms taped to a stick like a sucker. Actually year round for fun. Those were always a big hit at parties. “Hey want a sucker? This will make it safe!”

Xmas, they had red and green flavored condoms. Red was peppermint green was fruity.

Going to a convention they would ship me with several hundred glittery shiny package condoms. I had an alligator clip necklace for those shiny bitches. Got so much love for it.

You name it, they did it with condoms. Because why the hell not make it fun??

Sadly I’m too old to social these days (jk I’m just not an event person anymore). Or I’d keep it up for sure.

  • I mean yeah, obviously I’m pissed, that’s why I mentioned it. They decided to replace part of my driveway because it had drainage lines or something (idfk) raked into it, it wasn’t even cracked. I feel it’s a gross breach of the social contract. At the same time a lot of the areas I’ve lived have treated the sidewalks as public property when it suits the city and private when it suits the city.

There’s just nothing I can actually do about it other than talk to people about it. A lot of people around here are fine with hurting everyone if it hurts the wrong people and boots them out, like me. They just don’t know they think I’m the wrong people, because I don’t “look” like one of their undesirable classes (tho I fit several unrelated to race). I get to hear all their thoughts about what should happen to people like me, and other “undesirables”.

Nobody even runs against conservatives here. And I mean I would run, but I’m so disgustingly unqualified for public service. I’d probably win just for being an alternative, since we have never had any, but then what?

  • They decided to repair the sidewalks last year, just out of nowhere, and tacked the amount on to your property tax as a special assessment if you didn’t make arrangements of your own to have someone come out and fix it when they wanted it fixed by. Any little crack was enough for them to demand you rip out the whole slab, even though the sidewalks have been in disrepair for over a decade, so they clearly didn’t care before. It was not a fun surprise when the flyer came that basically said “these are the slabs we’ve decided to replace, this is what we are going to charge you, you have to pay the full amount this year.”

And like, I know sidewalks are sort of a gray area, but I already take care of them (clear leaves, snow, etc) and stuff, I shouldn’t also have to privately pay for them to be maintained on my property when I can’t choose not to have them…

So like my area is good for a lot of things, but that definitely isn’t one of them. I’m pretty sure because it’s a conservative area, the money is being intentionally funneled into specific companies doing the work, and they can’t charge nearly as much if the city picks up the tab. Probably friends with or bribing the people making decisions…

  • My city just did the lead pipe replacement. I did not do my house feed because I can’t swing 16k 6 months after they announced plans to do it (that’s also fully 1/4 of what I originally paid for the whole house 10 years ago, and I’m still making payments on that -I’m in a very low COL area, 40k is really good pay here, I usually make around 30k when I’m able to work-, so that is a SUBSTANTIAL amount of money for me), cuz yeah the city doesn’t cover from the main line into the house… (I do have a reverse osmosis unit, however, because I’ve known about the lead pipes since I bought the place, and all my drinking or cooking water goes through that, so I’m not like consuming lead all the time, just microplastics…)

When I told them I can’t afford it because I’m unemployed and disabled, they told me I should just take out a loan for it. Yeah, because that’s a great idea when you don’t have money or know when you might… increase your monthly money needs! Brilliant! They then said I’ll have to do it by 2028 or my water will be shut off… cool, that makes me feel a lot better about being fucking broke.

So like I’m totally on board with replacing them, but holy fuck does it suck for the affected areas. To say nothing of 4 months of constant structure-shaking construction.

  • I was automatically enrolled in it a while back because I’m on income-based repayments, and they just keep delaying even recertification. I haven’t had to do shit with my account in years. It’s really nice honestly, because I don’t intend to repay it (I’ve never made enough to warrant a payment, under the income based plan… so fuck ‘em)

I’m super glad you got into the infinite loop of stalling too! :) everyone should apply, when they can!

Basically, if I understand right, they are choosing to do nothing rather than fuck it all up and collect what they shouldn’t, which they would then have to credit.

  • I’m familiar with thither from the phrase “hither and thither”, which is a stupid-sounding phrase I read as a kid, and why I remember it. (Similar to knowing what “yon” means from “hither and yon(der)”)

I wouldn’t ever use either word, because I don’t see a need for pretentious pomposity, but perhaps he does. :)

I did used to have a friend who would use words correctly, but obscurely, and while he was smart and just enjoyed flexing his vocab, it was obnoxious af for everyone around him because even someone on the same intellectual level is going to go “what…??” Like, a lot… (basically, it is literally impossible for two people to know all the same things, so it’s just a “look I’m smart!” Flex). It’s just a bad way to communicate. Good way to be a poet, though.

  • Yeah, so did I, so I went looking at a few sources, and the takeaway from all of them is what’s above.

The articles are all pretty sparse on detail, but clearly trying to downplay that nothing tangibly changed, and I really don’t fully understand why, when this sort of thing often gets skewered. Maybe because it’s breaking news, and the negativity/reality is yet to come? Maybe it’s a sort of media focus shift toward that stuff actually happening?

Either way, this is definitely one of those “just have to wait and see how this move plays out” sort of things, because it could be great, as the headlines indicate, or it could be the same bullshit all over.
