PimEyes does not use photos from Facebook or other social media.
PimEyes doesn’t use images or data from Facebook or other social media.
It’s a click bait article that’s been regurgitating through the less informed part of the tech news world because it has Meta in its title and it sounds scary.
Actually good articles covering it would point out that the flaw is entirely a legislative one, where America and a large chunk of the world simply have zero privacy rights or protections.
Dumb, click bait article.
This is about PimEyes, and databases that hoard facial recognition data, not Meta or Rayban or smart glasses.
This has nothing to do with Facebook or Rayban. This can be done with a webcam and a laptop from 2006.
The entire problem here is PimEyes and the fact that it’s legal to collect and build a biometrics database in the first place.

To directly quote Linus:
Ok, lots of Russian trolls out and about.
It’s entirely clear why the change was done, it’s not getting reverted, and using multiple random anonymous accounts to try to “grass root” it by Russian troll factories isn’t going to change anything.
And FYI for the actual innocent bystanders who aren’t troll farm accounts - the “various compliance requirements” are not just a US thing.
If you haven’t heard of Russian sanctions yet, you should try to read the news some day. And by “news”, I don’t mean Russian state-sponsored spam.
As to sending me a revert patch - please use whatever mush you call brains. I’m Finnish. Did you think I’d be supporting Russian aggression? Apparently it’s not just lack of real news, it’s lack of history knowledge too.
I’d like to think it’s a user benefit, but I mean, historically… it wont’t be. (Yes they claim it’s encrypted, but I don’t trust Meta one bit to still not have some way to use this data for their benefit.)
Eh, I would actually believe this is purely user driven. Their solution doesn’t sound like it will work differently in Europe vs the rest of the world, and if their claims about it being encrypted and only user accessible are true, there is fundamentally no benefit to them from a data harvesting stand point.
They also face a lot of competition in the messaging space, moreso than any of their other apps, which will generally incentivize them to be more user focused.
The only low-code platform I actually respect.
Here’s the actual interview that was requested to be removed:
His whole premise is undermined by him not doing any research on the topic before deciding to write a blog post. Proton passkeys for instance, are cross platform, and the ability to transfer passkeys between devices is one of the features being worked on by the other providers.
No, it’s not.
It’s literally a concept no normie knows about nor would care about.
They are not trying to follow some tankie on a banned Marxist instance, they’re trying to follow cute cat pictures on lemmy.world.
End of the day, just like with safe site filters etc, you’ll end up with most instances following similar enough protocols and federating with each other and the vast majority of people seeing the vast majority of people, with some fringes blocked for some people.
I mean, you and him might be saying literally the same thing.
His point was that we can’t hit our climate targets because society is not organized in a way that allows us to. Everyone reorganizing around their unquestioning allegiance to an AI overlord would change that though.
Google will have to distribute rival third-party app stores within Google Play, and it must give rival third-party app stores access to the full catalog of Google Play apps, unless developers opt out individually.
It’s both, and honestly a pretty genius move on the judge’s part. “Oh you keep finding ways of leveraging this gate to uncompetitively make money, well how about I just mandate that you give access to both sides of the gate to everyone else.”
This is a wild downplay of this.
The judge is forcing Google to let third party app stores sell and distribute all the apps in the Google Play Store. That s massive.
What the honest fuck are you talking about?
Xbox does not have full screen ads.
So your opinion is that Amazon’s leadership decisions are always perfect and they have perfect insight into their company and foresight? That leadership of a tech company has never before undervalued the importance of their engineering staff, or how willing they were to quit in the face of an RTO mandate?
This is pessimistic nonsense.
No, Amazon is still very dependent on their software engineers, and no, it’s actually quite easy to move cloud offerings and they face stiff competition from both Azure and GCP amongst others.
Also, virtually every single internal piece of HR, management, customer service, DevOps, random internal tool to do X, is written by other software teams at Amazon. You fundamentally do not understand how big tech companies operate if you think they can afford to hemmorage engineering talent without impacting their bottom line in a multitude of ways.
And this is not even to mention the competition that Amazon faces across all its different businesses: Kobo in ebooks, Roku, Google, and Apple TV in streaming boxes; Netflix, Disney, HBO, YouTube in streaming video; Google, Apple, Spotify, Tidal, in music streaming; Shopify, PayPal, Visa, etc in payment processing; Walmart, Best Buy, Shopify, in eretail, etc. etc. etc.
Everyone having a FaceTime call does this. Every dash cam does this. Every Ring doorbell and self driving car does this. You can do this with a $10 usb pinhole webcam and an android phone or raspberry Pi.
The problem here is with facial recognition databases, not with people using cameras in public.
