Storm trackers in the Texas Panhandle recovered a massive hail stone that researchers say is likely to be a new state record.
Val and Amy Castor, veteran storm chasers with Oklahoma City television station KWTV, discovered a piece of hail more than 7 inches (17.78 centimeters) long Sunday along the side of the road near Vigo Park while they were chasing a major thunderstorm system.
Val Castor said the stone was about the size of a pineapple.
I presume we’ll hear Texas Republicans tell us that this huge hail stone shows that ice in June is possible, therefore there is no global warming.
Global warming? If Earth is getting hotter then how could I have all this money from Big Oil?
How large is that in energy drinks?
1.24
monsters or redbulls?
come to think of it. why hasn’t RB come out with the ‘monster RedBull’ ?Hailla large!
How small are the pineapples in Texas? Because a can of Monster is not the same size of any pineapple I’ve seen.
It’s Texan monster, not small pineapple.
What fucking two-bit news outlet wrote this story, all talking about pineapples. WE MEASURE IN BANANAS, N00BS
This isn’t reddit. Pineapples are the new bananas!
I would count the scales on a pineapple relative to its size.
no scales on bananasIf you have a laser, scales on bananas can be arranged.
On Lemmy, I believe the community has settled on beans as a unit of measurement
I’d estimate it’s between 3-10 bananas, depending on the size of the bananas.
It’s especially hacky since that thing looks much closer to the size of a banana than a pineapple anyways!
Anything but metric
Jesus, Mary and Joseph were immigrants that had to flee to avoid persecution to the sanctuary state of Egypt. This is Texas’s warning to repent and change their ways.
naw… just their power grid creating a vortex
Just got to say that at that point it isn’t a stone anymore.
Considering the Atlas stones in a strongman competition dwarf this hailstone, I’d say “stone” is still sufficient for that size. See also: dry stone walls, or UK imperial weight 1 stone = 14 lbs. (6.35kg)
I’ll grant you that the concept of a 14lb hailstone is terrifying no matter how apt the terminology might be, though.
Is that a metric pineapple or an imperial pineapple?
I wonder if that would kill me at terminal velocity.
A chunk of solid ice that big at terminal velocity? I’m betting yes, very much yes, very messily yes
Weird to see Val and Amy’s names in the wild. They are tornado season regulars here.
One pineapple or 10 staple length.
Says it’s the size of a pineapple; compares next to a can of Monster. And not even the larger can of monster, but the regular 16oz. Do they mean a canned pineapple? It does kinda look like a pineapple, though. Oblong and spikey.
Everything is bigger in Texas for real!
